Final Fantasy XI Red Mage Guide
Know your Macro’s. It takes split second timing to get Sleep off before Maat starts pounding on you. You should also add a /recast or /echo line to tell you when your spell can be cast again.

Be absolutely prepared before entering the ring. Before the fight step back from the computer and relax, jog in place, drink some water, pet the dog, anything to clear your head. Check you macros, your equipment and the timers on Chainspell and Convert before going in. Don’t just run in.

Most importantly, Keep a cool head! Loosing your focus or freaking out is the surest way to lose this fight. Things will look bad every now and then but don’t give up.

Blink, and Stoneskin. While you are waiting for Dispel to recast you should try to cast Paralyze or Bind. Gravity and Silence hardly ever stick and blind is not very useful so don’t bother. Once you have gotten rid of all of his buffs equip your Wind Staff and cast Areo III. This will wake Maat up so try to sleep him again with Sleep I. If he resists it cast Sleep II and run away. If he managed to buff himself up again cast dispel and then cast Areo III again. After doing this two or three times your MP will be running low and you will need to convert.
Make sure that Maat is slept with Sleep II then run out of range. Cast Stonekin and
Blink on yourself if they haven’t disappeared, equip your +MP rings and armor and then hit your Convert macro. Cure yourself with Cure IV, and then nuke Maat again. Continue on with the nuke and sleep strategy. By now Maat will be low on HP and its time to finish him off. Sleep him one last time and dispel all of his buffs. If you are low on MP use your medicine and then activate Chainspell. Now its all or nothing so don’t worry about sleeping Maat any more. Nuke, nuke and nuke some more until he has finally had enough and quits. Normaly it takes about six Areo III’s unless you have low inteligence. Congratulations! You are now able to level to seventy five and are an experienced beater of the elderly.

12.5. Final Tips
Successfully fighting Maat depends on a strategy but also on many little factors. Here are some tips and tricks to give you an edge.

Get your own testimony. This will help you practice for when you go up against the real thing. Several monsters drop this item but the Ruby Quadav is the easiest one to get it from. Use Stonaga to take away his Blink and then drag him to the zone so his cronies won’t interfere. Use the same strategy described for the Maat fight to take him down. You also may get a Ruby in the process!

Fight on Darksday. Casting a dark spell like Sleep and Dispel will have a greater chance of landing and sticking if you cast it on Darksday. Conversely, casting these spells on Lightsday will make the spell weaker and stick less. Some say that you should fight on Windsday to increase your Areo damage but in my opinion Sleep is more important.

Elemental Torque
Race Specific Belt
Race Specific Boots
Race Specific Gloves.

12.3. Food and supplies
If you need MP use a Rolanberry pie or Maron Glace. If you need some Int as well use a Pumpkin Pie +1.
Yagudo drink (Use instead of Refresh.)
Hi-Either (Can’t use another medicine for 15 seconds.)
Vile elixir. (MP and HP restoration.)
Super Ether x3 (Can’t use another medicine for five seconds.)
X-Potion x3(Can’t cast spells for five seconds.)

12.4. The battle flow
The basic strategy involves three parts. Maat will have himself very well debuffed so you must make sure that Dispel and your other debuffs will land. You will also be relying on your ability to nuke, not your melee skills, for the main damage dealing. Finally, you need to keep yourself well protected with Stoneskin and Blink for when he gets to close and starts to smack you around.
Here is a detailed walkthrough of how you should fight Maat. First, when you enter
the burning circle eat your food and pop your drink and then cast Stoneskin and Blink. Maat will be doing that as well and some say you should try to sleep him first before buffing up. But if sleep misses then he’ll start to melee on you and cause enormous damage. You can easily Dispel any protection he may have buff then sleep. Try Sleep II because the duration will last longer but if that fails use Sleep I. If that fails use Bind or Gravity and run as far away as you can from Maat while you wait for Sleep’s recast timer to finish. Many people think that it is not worth it to cast Protect, Shell or Phalanx. Hopefully you will only be taking damage if Sleep doesn’t work and the MP can be put to much better use. Those buffs will cost you at least 160 MP, which could be used to cast your other spells. Refresh is another spell you should probably not cast. A Yagado drink is much better and doesn’t cost any MP, which is scarce in this fight.
Once he is asleep move as far away from Maat as you can while still staying within
casting range. Equip your Pluto Staff and start casting Dispel to get rid of Maat’s Shell,

12. Maat
There comes a time in every players gaming life that they must summon all of their courage, strength and skill and face one of the most feared characters in all of Vanadiel. A crotchety old man that delights in forcing players to complete long and dangerous quests for his own amusement. Fortunately you get a chance for revenge when you finally get to go Hume’o a Hume’o with the little creep and give him a taste of his own Metamucil. This will be one of the toughest foes you will ever face and even with the best equipment, spells, and skill, there is no guarantee that you will be able to beat him. And unfortunetly, the Red Mage fight is considered the hardest of all.

12.1. Know Thy Foe
It may sound corny but in order to defeat Maat you must first be able to defeat
yourself. That is because Maat will be a Red Mage just like you, with all of your spells and Chainspell. He doesn’t have Convert thank goodness, and he will be using hand to hand instead of a sword. As for his HP and other stats, they will be the same as yours when you first enter the arena. It is rumored that any stat bonuses you have when you first enter, both positive and negative, will also carry over. This is just a rumor though and it is unlikely that SE would leave a bug like this in lest people go in stark naked.

12.2. Armoring up
Dark staff (Pluto Staff.)
Wind Staff(Austers Staff.)
Light Staff (For Cures, optional)

Warlock Tights
Moldavite Earring
Morion Earring
Electrum RingX2 (Astral rings are better but not required.)
Phantom Tathlum
Zircon RingX2
AquamarineX2
Enfeebling Torque (Absolute Must.)

These are purely for offensive abilities. They will help you if you want to melee and raise your damage output.

Boiled Crab. Vit+2, Defense+27%.
This is best used when farming and you want to avoid damage.

Final Fantasy XI Red Mage Guide-chapter007

Final Fantasy XI Red Mage Guide
This works like an Apple Pie except it gives a boost to Mnd. If your race has low Mnd and only needs a slight boost to MP consider using this food.

Mushroom Stew. MP+20, -4 STR, +6 MND, MP Regen +4.
This is the more expensive version of Roast Mushroom and it doesn’t stack. It does last for a whole hour though so if you have gil to blow (Ha ha ha!) consider this for really good parties.

Brain Stew. STR-5, DEX+5, Vit-5, AGI-5, INT+5, MND+5, CHR-5, HP/MP Regen +3.
This is a very expensive food that doesn’t stack but its good if you want a great boost to your mage stats and the party is too fast paced to rest long. It will also eliminate your ability to Melee so use with caution.

Sweet Rice Cake. MP+17, VIT+2, INT+3, +1, HP/MP Regen 2.
This has a nice boost to most of your stats but it’s pretty expensive. Use it in really good parties or special situations.

Pineapple Juice. 1MP every 3 seconds for 240 seconds.
You can eat a food like one mentioned above but you can also use a drink. Most of the other juices are not worth the trouble since they can’t stack, but Pineapple juice is a perfect ratio of price and usefulness. You can use this when farming to cut back on downtime, or you can use it in a party if you don’t want to spend a lot of time resting.

Yagudo Drink. 2MP every 3 sec for 180 seconds.
This is to expensive for regular use but its very good for replacing Refresh in a BCNM or other special situations. It will essentially replace Refresh without the MP lost casting it.

11.2. Strength Foods
When you are in a party you should always use mage foods but if you are soloing
or farming melee stats becomes more useful than mage stats.

Meat Chiefkabob. STR+5, VIT-1, AGI+2, INT+1, CHR+1, ATK+26%.

11. Red Mage Food
Every good Red Mage needs to eat food in order to be effective. It can make up for
deficiencies or increase your already good stats. Food is a constant drain on your wallet though so you should really consider cooking. Here are some of the foods that work best for a Red Mage.

11.1. +MP and mage stat foods
Red Mages are the weakest of all the mage classes in terms of MP and we need
every bit of INT and MND we can get. So when you are in a party you should use foods that boost these stats.

Apple Pie. MP+25, -1 AGI, +3 INT.
This will be a staple of your Red Mage Career. Early you should use these because of the boost to MP and Int and the fact that they can be bought very cheaply.

Mellon Pie. MP+25, AGI-1, INT +4.
This is like the Apple Pie except it has an extra point of Int. This is what most mid to high level Red Mages use instead of Apple Pies when Exping.

Rolanberry Pie. MP +50, AGI-1, Int+2.
This is not something you want to use regularly. It doesn’t stack and can be very expensive, so most people use it for special situations like BCNMs.

Marron Glace. MP+13%, MP Regen +1.
This is another food you will want to only use in special situations. It is somewhat expensive and it doesn’t stack but provides an enormous amount of MP and lasts for 180 minuets. It will cap off and only give a max of 85MP though.

Crimson Jelly. MP+10%, MP Regen +2, INT +6.
This is much better then the Marron Glace but much more expensive.

Roast Mushroom. +10 MP, -1 STR, +3 MND, MP Regen 2.

10. Artifact Armor II and Relic Gear
Getting your AF used to be a badge of honor that showed you were a hardcore
player and was a final reward for reaching level sixty. But after they raised the level cap to seventy five Square Enix decided that players needed a new goal to reach for. The answer was to create a second set of Artifact Armor with better stats and abilities, but was also much harder to get. Relic gear can only be obtained in the shadowy world of Dynamis, a parallel world inhabited by monsters far more powerful then anything you have yet seen. Fighting in Dynamis is brutal and getting there is expensive, but you can only get your AF2 from the mobs there.

Final Fantasy XI Red Mage Guide-chapter010

Final Fantasy XI Red Mage Guide
Miser Murphy is a ghost type monster with a level around 60-62 and can be quite a handful if you don’t have a well organized party. He will spawn whenever a Red Mage who has accepted this quest and talked to Sharzalion clicks on the well. Your Party will most likely need to be a full alliance around level 60. A six person Party of level 65 and up should be able to take it down with little trouble. In either case a Blink Tank is required for Main Tank, at least one Black Mage for Flare, and a Paladin is needed to Cover the Black Mage. Since he is a ghost monster he will have an Area of Effect Drain spell in which case an alliance will only fill back his health. He can also cast ancient magic with a one second casting time, a very nasty combination. Once he dies he will drop an Ancient Coin, trade it to a ??? point at the north end of the fountain to activate another cutscene. Once its done head back to Sharzalion and talk to him again. After that go to the left and talk to the Galka named Daggao to continue. He will say that in Garlaige Citadel he found a box but was unable to open it.
Now comes the hardest part. You must gather as many friends as you can and
head to Garlaige citadel. Go past the first Banishing Gate and look behind it to find a Oaken Box. Examining it will spawn a monster you need to fight so make sure that everyone is through the gate and that you have cleared the room of undead first. Examine it to spawn the Guardian Statue. It is level 64-65 and has a devastating AoE attack called Typhoon which will do 300 points of damage to everyone within range. To avoid death make sure the mages are as far away as possible and have several jobs that can cause Stun. I would recommend that you wait till level sixty in which case you will only need a twelve person alliance. Before that you will need a full eighteen person alliance and it will be much harder to win. Besides, you can’t put it on till sixty anyway.
When you finally kill him it will drop a Nail Puller. Go back to the box and trade the Nail Puller to it for a cutscene. Go back to Northern San D’Oria where a final cutscene will occur and the story behind your armor will finally be explained. After the cutscene jump up and down because in your inventory is your new shiny Warlocks Chapaou! Congratulations! You will also have the new title of Paragon of Red Mage Excellence!
